Why do you write the genre that you write?
At the macro level, I suppose I write crime fiction/mystery for the same reason we all do – it’s my first genre love as a reader. I often say I started on Nancy Drew, but that’s not true. I started with Encyclopedia Brown; you know, those books of short vignettes where the boy detective has to solve the case and in the back are the answers? Those little stories taught me to pay attention to detail. Then I moved on to Nancy, Agatha Christie, Mary Higgins Clark, and now I get to enjoy current soon-to-be-classics like SA Cosby, Rachel Howzell Hall, Hank Phillippi Ryan, and Julia Spencer Fleming. At a micro level, I write my Laurel Highlands Mysteries Series and Homefront Mysteries series because I have personal connections (I live near both areas and my grandmother inspired the protagonist in The Homefront series) and because they are also the types of books I would want to read myself if I were looking for a good time, which is what I want my readers to have when they dive into one of my stories.
Tell us how you got into writing?
This is a long, rambling story. I first dabbled in writing back in 1997, before I had kids. But when I did, the writing got put away. It wasn’t until I lost my job in 2011 and my husband asked, “Whatever happened to that book you were writing?” that I got serious. I joined Sisters in Crime, I met people, took classes, learned how much I didn’t know, and figured out the answer to “how hard can it be?” is pretty hard. But I enjoy this work more than anything I’ve ever done so I don’t plan on giving it up.
What’s next for you?
The third in The Homefront Mysteries, The Lessons We Learn, is scheduled for release in February 2022. Meanwhile, I’m writing the sixth book in The Laurel Highlands Mysteries, Thicker Than Water, while book 5, tentatively titled Lie Down with Dogs, is scheduled for release in August 2022.
What are you reading now?
Yes now I’m reading Death at Greenway by Lori Rader-Day.
