Now it’s time to learn more about the authors we read. . .
Why do you write the genre that you write?
During middle school I wrote book reviews for a local paper, but I enjoyed writing even before that experience. Because we moved often, I lost many of my early stories. My literary interests vary from young adult stories, children, mystery, thriller, horror, and fantasy. However, I have only published adult fiction, mysteries, thrillers, and urban fantasies. A personal goal is to publish a romance story within the next two years.
What’s the quirkiest quirk one of your characters has?
A character in my urban fantasy likes to carve wooden animal figures.
How did you come up with your pseudonym?
Since I have a career in medicine, I momentarily considered a pseudonym but decided against it because I worried about confusing readers.
Tell us how you got into writing?
As children, we were not allowed to watch television all day, so I spent a lot of time in the library. Reading nourished my desire to write books.
What jobs have you held before, during and/or after you became a writer?
I am a board-certified pediatrician and have been for over 25 years. Before completing medical school, I worked in different occupations from a grocery bagger to an answering phone operator.
How many books do you have published?
At this moment, I have published five books. Three books in my mystery series, one standalone psychological thriller, and one urban fantasy novel. Currently, I have two series. The second book in my urban fantasy series should be released this fall. My goal is to publish three books a year, but it is difficult.
Where do you write?
While I write in different locations in my home, I have to be near a window and prefer complete silence.
What is your favorite deadline snack?
I never considered a deadline snack. Chocolate and tea are necessary for my creativity and I consume them copiously while writing. At the conclusion of a manuscript, I do indulge in a daiquiri.
Who is an author you admire?
There are many authors I admire. The authors whose books I steadily consume are Walter Mosley, Tracy Clark, Stephen King, Veronica G. Henry, and Simone St. James.
What’s your favorite genre to read?
Mysteries remain my first love, born from my mom’s influence. I grew up reading Agatha Christie, Erle Stanley Gardner, Rex Stout, and Sidney Sheldon.
What are you reading now?
I finished “The Antique Hunters Guide to Murder” by CL Miller, and I am currently reading CJ Tudor’s “The Gathering.”
What is your favorite beverage to end the day?
Next to water my favorite beverage is kombucha.
What is next for you?
Producing an annual book for two different series in two different genres occupies most of my extracurricular time. My goal is to visit Alaska and the national parks in 2025. Other than creating a romance novel, I would like to publish a short story in a magazine.
Where can we find you?
MrsDoctor Writes has a free weekly newsletter on Substack. Since Meta began utilizing posts to train their AI LLM program, I am no longer on Instagram or Threads. Otherwise, please visit my website, MichelleCorbier.com, where I share book recommendations, articles relevant to the writing and reading community, and resources.
Now to have some fun . . .
Chocolate, vanilla, or another flavor
Mint chocolate chip is my favorite ice cream, but I prefer sorbet to ice cream.
Ice cream or cake
I bake a scrumptious chocolate bundt cake. Carrot cake with cream cheese icing is number one on my list.
Fruits or vegetables
Oranges and apples are my favorite fruits. Fresh sweet corn is delightful and versatile, though I rather not shuck it.
Breakfast, lunch, or dinner
Morning is my best time for writing. Thus, I rarely eat breakfast. Opposed to an entire meal, I snack throughout the day.
Dining in or dining out
Because I enjoy cooking, I rarely eat out. If I do, it’s not fast food.
City life or country living
Crowds and traffic irritate my hot flashes. Country life is my preference.
Beach or mountain
Similarly, I appreciate a mountain retreat over a beach. No sand in my crevices. Mountain sides with lush vegetation. A few woodland creatures. A nice fireplace with a cup of tea and scones.
Winter, Spring, Summer, or Fall
I hibernate in the summer. In the fall and spring, I bicycle around the neighborhood.
Extrovert or introvert
Growing up in a family of six, it was hard to be an introvert. I appreciate solitude but socialize well. Taking care of children allowed me to hone my social skills.
Early bird or night owl
I wake up with the sun without an alarm. Do not call me after nine pm unless it’s an emergency.
And even more fun . . .
What’s your favorite movie?
While I don’t have a favorite movie, I can’t resist Jurassic Park or a Marvel movie. This last year, American Fiction reigned as my favorite movie.
You are stranded on a deserted island. What are your three must-haves?
On a deserted island I could exist with my kombucha, Kindle reader, and chocolate.
My bio:
As a military dependent, Michelle moved between San Diego, California and Charleston, South Carolina. A career in medicine brought her to Michigan State where she completed a pediatric residency program. After over twenty years in clinical medicine, she accepted a job as a medical consultant.
As a member of Crime Writers of Color and Capitol Crimes, a sub-chapter of Sisters in Crime, her writing interests cover many genres—mysteries, thrillers, and fantasies. Her protagonists, like herself, are perimenopausal women who write to fill a void. Most days you can find her outside in her garden, drinking tea or biking.
