Why do you write the genre that you write?
I write what I enjoy reading so thrillers, mysteries, suspense, horror, magical realism… anything that is pulse-racing and so immersive I feel as if I’m in that world as I read. I want to create stories that are enjoyable and elicit those same reactions and emotions I feel for the readers who read my books.
What’s the quirkiest quirk one of your characters has?
Quirkiest quirk…maybe Elin, Nena’s sister. Elin likes to curse and make their mother clutch her pearls. Elin enjoys that immensely.
Tell us how you got into writing?
I’ve been writing since I was a kid, but officially I began querying Her Name Is Knight Jan. of 2020 and submitted a partial to Sisters in Crime’s Eleanor Taylor Bland Award for Emerging Writers of Color. After nearly 100 rejections I got my agent. Then I won the award. Then I got my 2-book deal with Thomas & Mercer and then the TV series option. It took me over 20 years to get back to writing and make a serious go of it and then when it happened, it happened very quick for me, back to back. But it was a long time coming and my story isn’t everyone’s story.
What jobs have you held before, during and/or after you became a writer?
My first job was at McDonald’s as a cashier! I still have my war wound burn from the fry basket. I was a middle and high school English teacher and then an instructional coach for virtual teachers. Now I am a freelance developmental editor, working toward book coaching certification as well as writing more books.
Where do you write?
I mainly write in my office. And in the evenings when I have a deadline looming like a guillotine over my head, I’ll write in my bedroom, in the car when one of the family is driving, or wherever I can get it in.
What is your favorite deadline snack?
My favorite snack is Sweet and Salty trail mix with M&M’s.
Who is an author you admire?
I really love Silvia Moreno-Garcia, Walter Mosely, and Stephen King. I think their writing style and mastery of the word is AMAZING. There are many, many more.
What’s your favorite genre to read?
Thrillers and horror.
What are you reading now?
Kind Worth Saving by Peter Swanson, Not So Perfect Strangers by L.S. Stratton.
What is your favorite beverage to end the day?
Chocolate milkshake or a Coke. Alcohol…like a wine spritzer. I’m a light-weight.
What is next for you?
I’m working on a standalone thriller and revising a book that hasn’t been announced yet. And thinking about what’s next after those. 😉

I like anyone who goes for chocolate milkshakes and writes thrillers. However I wouldn’t watch any of her favorite movies!
Love this series, but I’m excited to learn there will be a future standalone thriller! Keep on keeping on, Yas!
A burn from a fry basket? Yikes! Congrats to Yasmin on the upcoming release!
Oh, I hope they make the TV series. So exciting. I hope there will be more Nena Knight!
