Alexandra Atwood sits down for a Q&A with dru’s book musings responding to twenty or more questions so that we can learn more about her. Are you ready? Let’s get to know Alex.

What is your full name?
Alexandra Atwood, but everybody calls me Alex.

How old are you?
I’m eleven, but my dad still treats me like I’m a little kid.

What is your job?
I work at my dad’s B&B part-time. Okay, like, super part-time, especially during the school year. When I grow up, I wanna be a detective. . .or an archaeologist like my friend Flynn O’Connor. . .or maybe I’ll run the B&B. My dad says I can do anything I want except play the piano. He thinks that’s funny, but I haven’t told him I never want to learn piano anyway. There’s like so many keys!

Do you have a boyfriend?
Robbie Sachetti is kinda like my boyfriend. He doesn’t know it yet, but we’re gonna get married when we grow up. He has dreamy blue eyes and always makes me laugh.

What does he do?
Both me and Robbie are in sixth grade, and he doesn’t have a real job like I do.

Do you have any children?
Ewww. That’s gross. We haven’t even studied biology in school. Maybe when I’m old like my dad I’ll change my mind.

Do you have any siblings?
Not yet, but I’m working on it! Now that I finally got my dad and Marquetta together and they’re gonna get married, I’m hoping to have a baby brother. I could teach him all my investigation tricks and how to get out of trouble with Daddy. We’ll make an awesome team.

Are your parents nearby?
After my dad inherited the B&B, he divorced my real mom and moved us here. It was like right after we moved to Seaside Cove that I knew Marquetta and my dad were gonna get together. Even though I knew they were in love, they were clueless. It totally took me almost a whole year to get them together.

Who is your best friend?
Well, other than Robbie, that would be Sasha. We’re a lot alike, but we’re also super different. Sasha’s got brown hair and brown eyes, but I’ve got my mom’s red hair and blue eyes. We both love a good puzzle—especially when it’s like an investigation. Sasha’s into yoga and dance, but I’m more interested in finding the bad guys.

Do you have any pets?
No pets are allowed at the B&B, but my dad does let me visit Homer, that’s the mayor’s pet turtle in her ice cream shop. And once in a while I get to go into Isabelle’s Pet Shoppe and say hi to the dogs that are getting groomed.

What town do you live in?
Seaside Cove, California.

Do you live in a small town or a big city?
Seaside Cove only has like 700 people who live here full time. But we totally get a lot of tourists and treasure hunters who visit.

Type of dwelling and do you own or rent?
We have this awesome old house that was built more than a hundred years ago. My great-grandfather bought it and turned it into a B&B, but it never did much business until after he did a big remodel.

What is your favorite spot in your home?
I’ve got a couple of favorites. My room is awesome ‘cause Marquetta painted it teal and purple before me and my dad moved here. Those are like my favorite colors. I also love the kitchen. I guess maybe that’s more because that’s where Marquetta is most of the time.

Favorite meal and dessert?
Mac n’ Cheese is totally my favorite, and Marquetta’s is way better than that box stuff my dad used to get in New York. My favorite dessert is like ANYTHING chocolate!

Do you have any hobbies?
Other than solving murders? I’m a junior reporter for our town newsletter. It’s called The Cove Talkers and it comes out once a week unless there’s something super big going on. My dad calls it a total gossip rag, but I like writing about the hard news. Not that we get much of that in Seaside Cove. At least I have a story to write about the treasure hunter’s murder and how I helped the cops solve it.

What is your favorite vacation spot?
Me and my dad have never been on an actual vacation, but I think it would be awesome to go to Disneyland.

What music do you listen to?
I like Bruno Mars and Justin Bieber, but I also like some country, too.

Do you have a favorite book?
That’s kinda funny ‘cause me and my dad have the same favorite author. We both like Carl Hiaasen, but my dad won’t let me read the same books he does ‘cause he says I’m not old enough. He gave me a copy of Hoot and I totally loved it. When he said he thought he might want to read it, I told him he couldn’t ‘cause he was too old for the book! LOL

What is your idea of a really fun time?
Stakeouts are awesome, but they can get kinda boring if you don’t have good snacks. That would make my most favorite thing a trip to Scoops n ’Scones for chocolate ice cream and a chance to talk to the mayor’s turtle Homer.

If you were to write a memoir, what would you call it?
A memoir? Isn’t that like what old people write before they die? That’s like super depressing.

Amateur or professional sleuth and whom do you work with?
I’m eleven, so I can’t be a professional. But after I solved a couple murders, the Chief of Police and the mayor decided it was okay for me to work with the cops as long as it was okay with my dad. He’s like totally against the idea ‘cause he worries so much, but I’m super careful and never get in a dangerous situation. Well, almost never. Or maybe once in a while.

In a few sentences, what is a typical day in your life like?
Most of the time I have school, so I get up and help my dad in the dining room for about half and hour. Then I have breakfast and ride my bike to school. After I get home, I have homework to do. It’s all like super boring.

What does a typical day look like when you are on a case?
They’re like, always different. On my last case, Marquetta let me do a stakeout at the park down the street. That was fun until I got grounded for leaving the park to go investigate something suspicious. I also got to go out to Dead Man’s Cove to see where my friend Flynn O’Connor is diving with her team. They’re bringing up an old Spanish galleon that sunk in the bay. I got in trouble for going out there ‘cause I left town without my dad’s permission. See? It really does suck being a kid. You totally have to have permission to do anything.

Hey Journal,

I just talked to this super nice lady named Dru Ann Love. We’ve talked before and she was always pretty cool. She’s got an awesome blog and she invited me over to visit again. Don’t tell her I said this, but she was kinda nosey this time. She asked me all kinds of super personal questions. I don’t want to get her in trouble or anything, so I’m not gonna tell my dad about this.

Xoxo,
Alex

Seaside Cove amateur sleuths Rick and Alexandra Atwood are back!

Seaside Cove Bed & Breakfast owner Rick Atwood is again called on to assist his friend, Chief of Police Adam Cunningham, with a murder investigation. The case seems straightforward enough. Clive Crabbe, who has a quick temper and a strong jealous streak, was found hunched over the victim after the man made advances toward Clive’s ex-wife.

A murder investigation is the last thing Rick wants right now. The B&B is booked solid. The town is inundated with tourists and news reporters chasing stories about treasure thieves. And Rick’s wedding to Marquetta Weiss is just weeks away. As if that wasn’t enough, Rick’s eleven-year-old daughter Alex is not only itching to help the cops solve another murder, but she’s forming an unhealthy friendship with a B&B guest.

As the murder investigation progresses, Rick realizes Alex’s new friend could be at the center of everything. The worst part is that Alex may be the one person capable of cracking the case.
