Welcome to the Lazy Mermaid Lobster Shack! My name is Allegra Larkin, but you can call me Allie. Iโ€™m 27-years-old and I was a ballerina โ€“ until I broke my ankle in a very unlucky tumble down the stairs of my Boston apartment building. Iโ€™ve been working in my Aunt Gullyโ€™s lobster shack all summer and now my ankle has healed well enough for me to get back into training.

The Lazy Mermaid is in my hometown of Mystic Bay, Connecticut. Imagine a New England village with a bright white lighthouse standing tall against a deep blue sky, sea captainโ€™s houses with widowโ€™s walks, and plenty of charming shops ringing the town green โ€“ thatโ€™s Mystic Bay. Itโ€™s even more beautiful in the fall, when the leaves turn scarlet and gold.

Things have quieted down after all the excitement of the past summer, when our town was rocked by several murders. My broken ankle has healed well enough that Iโ€™m helping my beloved dance instructor, Madame Svetlana Monachova, teach a class at nearby Graystone College. Soon Iโ€™ll be able to dance in The Nutcracker, my lifelong dream. In the meantime, the changing leaves are still bringing plenty of tourists to the shack where theyโ€™re warming up with Aunt Gullyโ€™s savory secret recipe clam chowder.

But I shouldโ€™ve known things wouldnโ€™t stay quiet for long.

Iโ€™d just finished decorating the shack with pumpkins and mums when Bertha Betancourt, the Lobster Lady of Mystic Bay, brought in the catch of a lifetime โ€“ a three-foot-long lobster the media promptly dubbed Lobzilla. But the very next day, Lobzilla was stolen from our lobster shed. There were break ins at Aunt Gullyโ€™s cottage and at the home of the Parishes, the townโ€™s oldest and wealthiest family.

My friend Verity and I were invited to the costume party at the Parish mansion. I was beyond excited, despite the lore that says Otis Parish, the founder of Mystic Bay, leaves his grave and walks on Halloween night โ€“ and those unlucky enough to cross his path will lose their life on a strange altar-shaped rock in the old Parish family cemetery called the Witchโ€™s Rock.

With so many strange things happening, I was not surprised when Death crashed the party.
