Hi, I’m Angie Russo, and my pet cat never ever stops talking. Not just mews and meows, but actual words that I can understand. So far, I’m the only one who seems to have this ability, and I still have absolutely no idea why.

It all started when I got zapped by a faulty coffee maker at the law firm where I work as a paralegal. Long story short, I woke up with the ability to talk to this spoiled cat and he used that connection between us to corral me into helping solve his late owner’s murder.

That all went down a few months ago.

Since then, Octo-Cat and I have been settling into our new life as roommates, and he’s nice to me more often than not just so long as I feed him his breakfast on time and never, ever call him “kitty.” He’s even learned how to use his iPad to call me on FaceTime so we can check in with each other while I’m at work.

Yes, his iPad.

Have I mentioned just how spoiled he is?

Not only does he have his own tablet—and a trust fund, too—but he insists on drinking Evian fresh from the bottle and will only eat certain flavors of Fancy Feast when served on specific dishes and according to his rigorously kept, though fully unnecessary, schedule.

Yes, my cat totally dictates my schedule, love life, and more.

I guess somebody has to do it, though, because I really wasn’t doing the best job when left to my own devices.

See, all my life I’ve been on the search for that one amazing talent that would make me special and give me purpose. My nan starred on Broadway in her prime, and my parents both work for the local news station and love what they do.

They were all so sure of their talents early in life, but I’ve really struggled to pinpoint mine. I couldn’t even figure out my passion well enough to nail down a bachelor’s degree, racking up seven associate degrees instead.

Turned out I just needed to get a cat. Seriously! Who’d have thought that was the one thing I’ve been missing all along?

Things have changed a lot since he first came into my life, too. Not only have I reduced my hours at the firm to part-time, but I’ll soon be moving in to a giant manor house I’d have never thought I could afford even with a million years of saving up. Octo-Cat’s monthly trust fund stipend is more than double what I was making full-time, anyway.

In a way, he’s kind of my boss, but I prefer to think of us as a team.

Sure, our crime-stopping antics have put my life in danger two for two, but that’s all in a day’s work, right?

I was just your normal twenty-something with seven associate degrees and no idea what I wanted to do with my life. That is, until I died. . . Well, almost.

As if a near-death experience at the hands of an old coffeemaker wasn’t embarrassing enough, I woke up to find I could talk to animals. Or rather one animal in particular.

His full name is Octavius Maxwell Ricardo Edmund Frederick Fulton, but since that’s way too long for anyone to remember, I’ve taken to calling him Octo-Cat. He talks so fast he can be difficult to understand, but seems to be telling me that his late owner didn’t die of natural causes like everyone believes.

Well, now it looks like I no longer have a choice, apparently my life calling is to serve as Blueberry Bay’s first ever pet whisperer P.I while maintaining my façade as a paralegal at the offices of Fulton, Thompson & Associates.

I just have one question: How did Dr. Doolittle make this gig look so easy?
