My name is Annie Hershberger and I am sixteen years old. My mamm died a few years ago, and now it is just me and Dat. It was an adjustment for us at first, but we have figured it out. I have even gotten used to being in the house alone when Dat—who is the bishop of our church district—must attend to his duties.
But lately, when he is not there, I am scared—scared that what happened to Henry’s dat will happen to my dat. That I, too, will walk into the barn looking for my dat and find him. . .dead.
I try to tell myself things will be okay, that the English police are wrong about what happened to Henry’s dat, but I am not so sure. Bad things are starting to happen all around us, farm by farm.
And last night? When I got home from my hymn sing? My sweet Katie’s stable door was unlatched.
I try to tell myself her door was unlatched because I was careless, but I am not so sure. . .
Perhaps the person who is stealing money was at my house, too.
Or, perhaps, the person who killed Henry’s dat came looking for mine?
A Churn For the Worse is the fifth book in the Amish mystery series, published by Penguin-Random House, March 2016.
The national bestselling author of Suspendered Sentence returns to Heavenly, Pennsylvania, where shop owner Claire Weatherly and Detective Jakob Fisher must put on their thinking kapps to solve a string of robberies and a murder in the Amish community. . .
When an Amish farmer is found dead in his barn, his family accepts his death as God’s will. But Detective Jakob Fisher knows the farmer didn’t hit himself in the head with the shovel lying beside his body. And when it comes to light that a stranger appeared at the farmer’s home and now money is missing from their milk can, Fisher suspects robbery as the motive—especially when another Amish family is victimized.
Getting to the truth proves difficult, however, since Fisher has two strikes against him in the eyes of the Amish—his chosen career, and the Amish roots he left behind. Desperate to stop a murderous thief, Fisher turns to Heavenly Treasures shop owner Claire Weatherly for help. The trust she’s earned from the Amish community enables her to go where the detective cannot—straight into the path of a killer. . .
