Beatrice YoungHi, I’m Beatrice Young. I’m 62 years young (hence the last name) and I live in Ashbrook, New Hampshire where I run the Cozy Cat Café and solve mysteries.

Some people call me a crazy cat lady. I don’t know if that’s supposed to be an insult or what. My three cats—Hamish, Lucky, and Petunia—are the light of my life. Those people are probably just jealous because they don’t have three cats that are nearly as great. I mean, not only are they cute and cuddly with big personalities, but they help me solve mysteries. So, I guess there’s a lot to be jealous about!

Okay, so my typical day. Well, I like to get up early. I’d rather get up at noon but my body has an annoying habit of waking me up at 6 or earlier. Plus the kitties would never let me sleep in. Usually I wake up with Hamish sleeping on the pillow next to me—that’s my Maine Coon. Lucky, my little black cat, loves to sleep under the covers by my feet. And I sure appreciate it because those New Hampshire winters can be fierce! My pretty Himalayan Petunia either snuggles up with Hamish or she sleeps right on my chest. I swear it can’t be good for my heart. She’s so heavy I’m afraid it’s going to just stop one of these days.

Anyway, I get up and feed the cats straightaway. I spend a fortune on cat food but hey, it’s cheaper than putting kids through university. Once they’re crunching away on their kibbles, I put on a pot of coffee and stare vacantly out the window. I live in a converted barn house in the countryside and I feel really blessed that every morning I can look out my window and see the woods and all its critters—blue jays and chickadees at my feeder, squirrels hopping across the lawn, even the occasional deer.

My best friend (and ex-husband) Matthew usually starts texting me then, because he knows I’m up. I’ll send him photos of the view and he’ll send me funny photos of himself—usually really bad selfies because he’s a luddite who still can’t figure out how to use the camera on his phone.

I get to the café around 8 or 9 in the morning. It’s about 20 minutes away in the town of Ashbrook. My other bestie, Zoe, is the pastry chef and she gets in before me. I put the cats in my office and then Zoe and I have a cup of coffee together in the kitchen. I really like our Nutella croissants, so if I’m feeling indulgent I’ll have one of those too! Usually I tell Zoe about whatever mystery I’m solving and she complains about her boyfriend Hunter. I think he’s a waste of space, but that’s just my opinion.

During the day I’m Ms. Manager and I sit in my office and do any one of the bajillion things I need to do—payroll, pay taxes, manage the books, update our social media accounts, send in orders, and try to figure out who’s leaving bad reviews of the café on Tripadvisor and Yelp so I can hunt them down and kill them . . . ha! Just kidding.

This all sounds very productive but I often get distracted because my friend Sheriff Roy drops by for lunch or the cats get into a big hissy fight or I’m playing Candy Crush on my phone or I need to leave to hunt down an extortionist, counterfeiter, mayor-killer, or any number of other bad guys. Actually, the amateur sleuth stuff takes up a lot of my time these days. But hey, the cats love it and so do I.

I wind down my day around 5. I might stick around to help Zoe with the baking and then we’ll go to the Ashbrook Grape together, my favorite bar, and drink too much wine. Or Matthew will come over to my house and we’ll cook dinner together. He makes a mean spaghetti Bolognese. The cats get super excited whenever I have company. Lucky will run up and down the stairs until he exhausts himself, Petunia will put on a show flirting with Matt, and Hamish will crawl into his lap at every opportunity. Sometimes we watch Netflix after or I shoo Matt out so I can soak in the tub with a good mystery novel.

That’s my typical day. It’s filled with cats, work, and friends—exactly how I like it. I’m happier than I’ve ever been in my whole life and I enjoy every day. I hope you liked this little peek into my life.
