Hello, I’m Frankie. Francis William Rowan Grennan to my parents but Frankie to everyone else. I teach mathematics at St. Brennan’s School for Boys in Dunmullach, a small village in southwest Ireland, near Cork. Life in the village was pretty tame until about a year ago. During the school term, I spent days in class and evenings in the pub, the Mad Rabbit. Weekends, I devoted to my rose garden—I’m not bragging when I say champion-quality roses as I recently won a medal in a garden competition—and to Miles Davis. I love jazz and Miles is my favorite. School holidays were much the same, only with no class and more time in the pub. I’m a solitary fella. Some call me a curmudgeon. I didn’t spend much time socializing.

Things changed last October when Gethsemane Brown landed in the village and dialed the craic up to ninety. She took a position as music director at St. Brennan’s. The headmaster was happy to have her as she’s a world class musician but this headstrong American and I clashed from our first meeting. I wanted her to pack up her violin and go back to the States. Then dead bodies started showing up and Gethsemane—I call her Sissy to tease her—displayed a knack for sussing out the responsible party. She also has a knack for breaking through my defenses and pulling me out of my shell and into her adventures. I’m Watson to her Holmes. Something else happened when Sissy arrived—I became less grumpy. I spent less time at the pub—it’s hard to investigate a murder sitting on a bar stool. I even risked a romantic relationship again. (Ask me about my ex-wife. On second thought, don’t.)

Right now, I’m enjoying the last few weeks of summer before school term begins. I’m still basking in my recent rose-growing triumph and spending time with my new mot, Verna. Trouble is, Verna’s ex-fiancé arrived in the village with his new fiancée. Nothing good can come of this. If Sissy runs true to form, the wedding will soon be off and the hunt for a murderer on.
