One side benefit from being a nun is you get used to name changes. I was born Giulia Falcone, then I became Sister Mary Regina Coelis for ten years. When I jumped the wall (yes, there really was a wall, but I walked out the front door) I was Giulia Falcone again. Now I’m married and my name is Giulia Driscoll. In a few months I’ll also be “mom.”
It’s a wild ride. My assistant Sidney tells me I should stock up on sleep. She should know, because her Jessamine is cutting teeth and no one in their house is getting any sleep. It’s a good thing I love coffee.
Speaking of the best beverage in the world, I’m limited to only two cups per day for the duration of the pregnancy. Two cups! I enjoy a beer or a glass of wine in the evening, but giving up alcohol while pregnant isn’t remotely as difficult as the Draconian coffee rule. I know when children misbehave some mothers remind them of how long they were in labor. When my little one misbehaves, I’m going to remind him (or her) of the Great Coffee Deprivation.
There I go, speaking in capital letters again. It’s a holdover from my latest case. My client hired me to find her missing twin sister and the trail led to a local Doomsday Prepper compound. The best way to infiltrate it was to go undercover as a Prepper myself. Sounds simple, doesn’t it? Not when the way in requires a plunge into online dating and a match with Preppers.
Since Preppers are obsessed with surviving after nuclear war or a worldwide electromagnetic pulse, they look for childbearing potential. In other words, the Pelvis of the Future. Ten years in the convent did not prepare me for the photos and videos on dating sites or men who did not respect personal space. Only my need to remain undercover prevented me from breaking a couple of wrists.
My husband Frank thought my dating tribulations were funny. He also has a nickname for the baby which will most definitely not become the baby’s actual name, assuming it’s a boy. I admit I’m hoping it’s a boy. I could use a change after living with anywhere between five and ninety-five women for ten years. Then again, if it’s a girl I can show her how to take care of herself. So can her daddy. I’m pretty sure he’ll be the type of father who will be cleaning his gun on the porch when potential suitors arrive.
If it’s a boy, I can do the same. It‘s safe to say Sister Mary Regina Coelis is long gone. Nuns don’t carry a Glock. This baby’s mama does.
Right now I wish I was carrying an extra-large French roast with hazelnut syrup. This baby owes me so much coffee.
Nun But The Brave is the third book in the Giulia Driscoll humorous mystery series, published by Henery Press, July 12, 2016.
Giulia Driscoll’s sister-in-law barges into Driscoll Investigations and promptly passes out from OD’ing on an unknown drug. One teenager is found dead in the park and another behind a dumpster. DI’s new client insists her missing twin sister is not dead and enlists Giulia as the “Missing Person Whisperer.” Hooray for steady work?
The missing sister’s trail leads to married, pregnant, ex-nun Giulia’s first experience with online dating sites, to the delight of her husband and employees. Those dates lead her to local Doomsday Preppers. They grow their own everything, and that everything may be connected to the drugs, her sister-in-law, and the missing twin. These Preppers are about to learn the true meaning of doom.

I first “met” Giulia when she worked for Frank in his agency (pre-Henery Press–LOL!). I got attached to the characters and was thrilled when I found out Ms. Loweecey would continue with this series–with Giulia taking over.
