People seem to think being a private investigator in Nashville is glamorous.
My mornings suggest otherwise.
I share my studio home and office above The Crooked Note on Music Row with three very opinionated companions. Moose, my grumpy Chow Chow, believes breakfast should happen immediately. Mini Pearl, my pint-sized Yorkie, wakes up ready to take on the world. And Cecil, my British Shorthair, considers himself management. He supervises from the most comfortable spot available.
After coffee and breakfast, my workday begins without much of a commute. One minute I’m feeding the animals, the next I’m at my desk wondering what kind of trouble Nashville has cooked up for me.
Lately, that trouble involves the Nashville Thunder Prix.
My bestie’s boyfriend, Tim, invited us to spend the day at the races. Fast cars, roaring engines, plenty of food. What could go wrong?
A lot.
I watched driver Brad Cruise’s car slam into the barrier. Then we discovered someone had tampered with it.
So much for a relaxing day at the track.
That’s when Detective Bo Beckett and I started asking questions. Bo likes to remind me that he’s the police detective. I like to remind him that I’m a licensed PI. Somehow, between the two of us, we usually manage to uncover the truth.
This case isn’t making it easy.
There’s a team owner with plenty to lose, a rival driver, a former agent, a mechanic, and several people who seem to know more than they’re saying. Somewhere among them is someone who wanted Brad out of the race permanently.
Of course, I have my own investigative team.
Moose provides moral support, especially when treats are involved. Mini Pearl is convinced her tiny size is no obstacle to taking charge. Cecil watches everything with the cool detachment of someone who believes humans make life unnecessarily complicated.
He may have a point.
By evening, I’m back upstairs with my notebook open, coffee nearby, and three animals settled around me. Bo will eventually tell me I’ve done enough for one day.
I’ll agree.
Then I’ll think about the case for another three hours.
Because someone tampered with Brad Cruise’s car.
And until I know who, my day isn’t really over.

The Nashville Thunder Prix promises speed, spectacle, and a rare weekend off for private investigator Hattie Leiper and Detective Bo Beckett.
What it delivers instead is a body, a wrecked car, and a killer who knows how to hide in plain sight.
When rising star Brad Cruise dies in a crash quickly ruled no accident, Hattie can’t stay on the sidelines. Brad was a client of Tim, Gracie’s boyfriend, and that’s reason enough to get involved.
She trades her VIP pass for a pit pass and faces a suspect list as long as the racetrack itself: a vengeful ex-agent, a bitter rival, and a team owner with everything to lose.
With Moose, Mini Pearl, and Cecil along for the ride, Hattie has one lap left to catch a killer—before someone else crosses the finish line for the very last time.
