The Murder of a Friend
by Detective Jakob Fisher of the Heavenly, PA Police Department
Deciding to join the police force is a big decision for anyone. For me, making that decision also meant I could no longer have a relationship with my family. You see, I was raised Amish, and since I felt the calling for police work after my baptism, it meant losing everything.
Fortunately for me, I had a mentor—the police chief in my hometown of Heavenly, Pennsylvania. Russ Granger took me under his wing and became an almost surrogate father for me as I learned my new career and how to navigate a completely new life.
Retired (at least on paper) now, Russ returned to the area this week to visit his daughter and grandchildren. . .and me. The second I got the news he was in town, I knew I wanted him to meet Claire Weatherly, the woman I’ve been seeing for a while now.
But that meeting didn’t happen. Instead, when Claire finally sees Russ for the first time, it’ll be at his wake. Because Russ Granger, my mentor and friend, was murdered in the wee hours of the morning, outside the garage apartment he was staying at while visiting his daughter.
Russ.
Murdered.
My head is still reeling with the reality of it all. Who would want to kill Russ? And why? The questions are easy, the answers not.
But I can tell you this much, I will figure out who did this to him. One way or the other.

Jakob and Claire have been enjoying more time together in lovely Heavenly, PA. With Claire’s help, the detective is making slow progress reconnecting with the members of his Amish family who shunned him when he left to pursue a career in law enforcement. Jakob’s mentor, Russ Granger, the long-retired police chief who inspired him to become a cop, is back in town. Claire has always wanted to meet the man who changed the course of Jakob’s life. But not long after he arrives in Heavenly, Russ is murdered.
Jakob can only imagine that his old friend must have been killed by someone outside of the Amish community. He and Claire soon find that things are not as they seem–and that Russ may have stumbled into something sinister before he was killed. The answers they uncover are closer to home and more shocking than they ever expected.

I have been reading this series and am so glad this next book is out! I cannot imagine how heartbreaking it is to be shunned! Jakob is very brave to have gone back to his town. I do love how little by little he and his family seem to communicate. Even just a glance and eye contact is a start!
Thank you for giving away this book.
I read this book this week, and I think it is one of my favorites. The characterizations are so rich and if you’ve been following the series, it been great to read how they have evolved over time.
Love the blurb for this book. Plus the cover. Love to read Amish stories. I visit the Amish country in Holmes county Ohio all the time. Love the town of Berlin, Ohio. I was born in Pennsylvania and have visited Lancaster. The Amish community there. That really is something when the Amish shun their family for wanting to do something outside if their faith. This book is very intriguing to me for that reason. Plus I love to read murder mysteries. An added plus is Amish background thrown in.
I love this series! How hard to live in a town with your family but to be shunned by them and the community. This author gives hope to a tough situation.
I enjoy this series and looking forward to the new book.

This sounds fantastic. I live in an area where there are some Amish communities, and their ability to live their way in our crazy modern world is always interesting.

I love this series! Can’t wait to read “Just Plain Murder”. My Dad was my mentor, he taught me so much about the transportation industry and I made it my career also.
Thank you for offering a chance to win this!
I always enjoy this series and can’t wait to read this book. I have never had a mentor. Renee
I love this series. We used to live in a rental house on an Amish farm. Yes, I’ve had a mentor or two in my life…Charlie Marrone was my first field instructor as a social worker…this whole family is now close to Charlie. He is the one who showed me what being a real social worker is about…and another was Jim Smoker….formerly a fixture in our Peace Child network.a good man…
I’ve never had a mentor but it might have been nice to have one. Sounds like an interesting series, with some family drama as well as a murder mystery to solve.
Absolutely love this series. My mentor was my fourth grade teacher. Said I could be and do anything I put my mind too.
I never had a mentor in life, tho I’ve had many people who has stepped into my life to give guidance & inspiration…
