Hey, Robbie Jordan here, in South Lick, Indiana. Today has been both good and bad, I’ll tell you.
I was flipping banana-whole-wheat pancakes, baking cheesy biscuits, and frying up bacon and sausage all morning here at Pans ‘N Pancakes. That’s my country store breakfast-and-lunch joint in the scenic hills of southern Indiana. The store is filled with antique cookware, there’s a chess board in one of the tables and a pickle barrel in the corner, and my foundling kitty Birdy is hanging out in my apartment at the back.
Today my teenaged helper Danna and I got a bit of a break before the lunch rush started up at the end of the morning. Then we flipped beef, turkey, and veggie burgers until mid afternoon, with barely a chance to sit down.
But this morning, the day after the the aide to the mayor was found murdered, there were some folks shooting me suspicious looks. Because Stella and I hadn’t gotten along too well. And the cheesy biscuit found stuffed in her mouth hit a little too close to home.
I’m sure it’ll all work out. Our extra-tall police lieutenant, Buck Bird, is on the case. He talks slow like a Hoosier, and even though he projects kind of a hick image, he seems pretty smart under it all.
I’ve been living in the midwest for four years now, and it sort of grows on you. After my mom died suddenly last winter in Santa Barbara where I grew up, I knew I was going to stay. I’m sure blessed both with the love of my aunt Adele, the former mayor of South Lick, and with my mom having trained me in carpentry. When I bought the run-down country store, it saved me a ton of money being able to do all the renovation work myself.
I know Mom is watching me from somewhere, smiling down on her daughter. Now if the local police could only figure out who really killed Stella.
Flipped for Murder, the first book in the Country Store Mysteries series, releases October 27 and is written under the name Maddie Day. Maddie (aka Edith Maxwell), wants me to tell you the book is available for preorder now!
You can read more about Robbie in Flipped For Murder, the first book in the NEW “Country Store” mystery series, published by Kensington.
About Flipped For Murder
In this freshly baked series, author Maddie Day lifts the lid on a small town in southern Indiana, where a newcomer is cooking up a new start–until a murderer muddles the recipe.
Nursing a broken heart, Robbie Jordan is trading in her life on the West Coast for the rolling hills of southern Indiana. After paying a visit to her Aunt Adele, she fell in love with the tiny town of South Lick. And when she spots a For Sale sign on a rundown country store, she decides to snap it up and put her skills as a cook and a carpenter to use. Everyone in town shows up for the grand re-opening of Pans ‘n Pancakes, but when the mayor’s disagreeable assistant is found dead, Robbie realizes that not all press is good press. With all eyes on her, she’ll have to summon her puzzle-solving skills to clear her name, unscramble the town’s darkest secrets, and track down a cold-blooded killer–before she’s the next to die.
