Trapped By RevengeMy life changed the day I stopped for carrots at the grocery store. I was checking out, minding my own business, when a loud boom echoed from the bank inside the store. I jerked in disbelief and turned to find a man clutching his chest and grabbing the mask off another man’s face. I got a good look at the guy’s unmasked face, and this time, he fired at me.

Next thing I know, I’m lying on the floor with a major headache. Luckily, the bullet only grazed my scalp, but the life-changing part came as I was getting stitches. I kept hearing the doctor say how lucky I was, and that if it had been just a little to the left, I’d be dead. How many doctors tell you that? That’s when I realized his mouth wasn’t moving. At first I thought I was losing my mind, but then I started hearing random thoughts from the detectives who asked if I could identify the killer. And then my husband starting thinking how grateful he was that I wasn’t dead…and who’d take care of the kids then?

You can imagine how horrified I was to hear what people were thinking, especially what they really thought of me. I hoped it would go away, but so far I’m still stuck with the mind-reading thing. It wouldn’t be so bad except for the red-head at my husband’s law firm. She was after my husband, and in a moment of weakness, I told her to leave him alone or I’d tell everyone about Uncle Joey. I really didn’t know who he was, only that she was supposed to keep him a secret. Unfortunately for me, he turned out to be the local crime boss.

The gunman was after me at that point, but so was Uncle Joey. His hit man ended up saving my life, but I had to tell Uncle Joey my secret to stay alive. Now I have to help Uncle Joey out, and over the course of our association, I’ve been in some risky situations. Sometimes, I even wonder how I’m still alive, but at least we’ve reached an understanding that mostly works.

I’ve also started my own consulting agency. I mean, why have a super-power if you can’t use it? Of course, I try to keep it a secret that I can read minds. I usually tell people I have ‘premonitions’ to be on the safe side. I’ve helped a lot of people with their problems, including the police, with fabulous results. My name’s even been in the paper.

Although today Uncle Joey called me in for a favor and just hearing his voice sent my blood-pressure sky-high. He wants me to listen to a private investigator who was spying on him for a client. He even set up an appointment for me with the guy. Somehow, I’ve got to get the PI thinking about Uncle Joey so I can find out who hired him. Maybe I could tell him I’m in the clutches of a mob-boss and could use his help to get out from under him. That should get him thinking about Uncle Joey for sure. If he had something on Uncle Joey that I could use against him, I might not even have to work for him anymore.

As hopeful as that sounds, I have a feeling it’s not going to be that easy. Where Uncle Joey’s concerned, it never is.
