Siân Anderson here – my sister’s Cait Morgan…you might know her. Yes – well spotted…we both married a man with the surname Anderson, which made me laugh. After all, there’s my sister, the famous criminal psychologist who likes to bang on about how rarely coincidences happen (always backed up by her husband, who’s a retired cop) and yet, in a world full of men with different family names, we two Morgan sisters ended up marrying two Anderson men. Not that my husband, Todd, and Cait’s husband, Bud, are related; it really is just a coincidence. Which I think makes my big sister just a bit cross.

I’ll see her soon: she and Bud are joining Todd and myself in Sydney for a bit of a get-together. It’s a long way for them to come from Vancouver, in Canada, and quite a way for us, from Perth, in Western Australia – but Todd goes to this mining conference every year (that’s his work – he’s a mining engineer) and it’s coming up in a couple of days, so Cait and Bud are taking advantage of the great rates for rooms at a fancy hotel overlooking Darling Harbour and joining us there. After the conference we’ve rented a house in a little town in the Blue Mountains called Katoomba. It should be a great chance for us all to spend some quality time together; it’s a peaceful area, where nothing much happens.

The last time I saw my sister was at her wedding, which was held at an amazing castle in Wales…but things didn’t turn out quite as we’d all hoped – well, you’d expect things to go a bit off-kilter when you find a choirmaster dead at the bottom of a staircase, and then a storm cuts you all off from the rest of the world, wouldn’t you? Yes, that was a traumatic few days, for so many reasons.

Of course, nothing like that is going to happen to spoil this trip…at least, it had better not. No dead bodies. No complicated puzzles to work out. And absolutely no one trying to hide secrets by lying their faces off! Todd needs a break, that’s for sure, and so do I. And it’ll be nice to see Cait again; it’s been almost two years since she and Bud got married; I know we text and talk quite…well, infrequently, I suppose, but it’s never the same as really spending time with someone, is it?

While Todd’s stuck in his presentations and meetings and so on, I’ll spend time with Cait and Bud, and I’ll do my best to make sure the pair of them don’t trip over any more corpses while they’re in Australia. I want them to really enjoy the country I’ve chosen as my new home…and I hope Cait and I get to spend a bit of time alone, too – because sisters thrive in each other’s company, don’t they?

Join Cait and Bud, and Siân and Todd, as they find that old crimes cast long shadows, in The Corpse with the Opal Fingers, the 13th Cait Morgan Mystery, published on 13th November 2023.

“I was ten years old when I found a murder weapon…it had killed ‘The Girl with the Opal Fingers’…”

Welsh Canadian professor of criminal psychology Cait Morgan, and her retired-cop husband Bud Anderson, are visiting Cait’s sister, Siân, and brother-in-law, Todd, in Australia. They’re enjoying the bustling delights of Sydney, and looking forward to a few quiet days in the famed Blue Mountains.

However, soon after it’s revealed that Todd once worked closely with a man convicted of a brutal slaying, the decades-old murder casts a threatening shadow over the foursome. Cait and Bud must discover the truth behind that case, as well reveal the complex reasons for an ever-growing number of deaths they fear might be associated with it, before tragedy can engulf Cait’s family.

Packed with local color, and quirky, memorable characters, this thirteenth book in the series is certainly unlucky for some. Will it prove to be the same for Cait and Bud?
