Most of my days are pretty boring. I’m Ellie Avery. I’m a mom of two small kids and I run a home-based business, so my days are like any other mom’s. There’s lots of coming and going in my life. Carpool lines, storytimes, naptimes, grocery store runs. You get the idea. Occasionally, there’s a burst of excitement like when I chaperone a field trip or meet my husband for lunch at the military base where he works, but most days are routine.
I’ve realized that I spend most of my time trying to finish something that I started earlier in the day. If you’re a mom, I’m sure you know what I’m talking about. I start making lunches, then have to stop and help my son find his Tonka truck for Show And Tell, which has mysteriously disappeared, then my daughter’s hair looks like she’s an object lesson for static electricity. Once those emergencies are solved, it’s back to the sandwiches. I get the kids off to school and set down to work on my business and the dog throws up on the carpet (why is it never on the hardwood or tile—always the carpet?) Another crisis that requires my immediate attention.
Interruptions are a challenge for me. See, I’m a checkmark kind of gal. I like my lists. I like that feeling of accomplishment I get when I cross off the last thing on my to-do list. I’m a professional organizer and I love helping people get control of their stuff and their schedules. I love sorting things out. My husband Mitch would tell you that I do more than sort—that I get involved in people’s lives. It’s true. I have to admit that I have gotten mixed up in a few crazy situations involving…well, murder…but I can’t help it if people confide in me, can I? And if I see something that’s a little weird, a little off…a little out of place, I have to tell the police, right? That’s exactly what happened a few months ago while we were in Alabama visiting family and going to a book festival—oh, hold on. The UPS guy is at the door and—yikes—it looks like the kids are setting up to watercolor in the middle of the living room. I’ll be right back…unless something else unexpected comes up, which you know, it usually does. 🙂
