Hi, I’m Alice.

When most people think of bodyguards, they think of beefy guys sticking close to their client and shoving paparazzi out of the way. I’m the opposite of that. Don’t get me wrong, the paparazzi totally deserve it. But my specialty is protective surveillance. Also, I’m not a guy. But I do work with the close protection—those are the bodyguards actually guarding someone’s body—to give them a heads up if something’s off.

Here’s how.

On a typical day, I’ll set up a surveillance site where I know my client is going to be. That way, I can make sure no one else is watching my client. If someone is, I’ll contact the guys who are close protection—the bodyguards, or BGs. That way they can get the client to safety before something bad happens, because action is faster than reaction.

That said, there really aren’t that many typical days in my profession. Where I go and what I do depends on what the client has planned. For example, this morning I got up at five. Worked out in my hotel room. Left before my client and waited in the lobby, looking for shifty loiterers. There were a lot of shifty people in that hotel, even if it was five stars. But none were watching for my client.

Eventually, my client emerged from the elevator with his gang of BGs. I pretended not to know any of them and walked out onto the street, where I stretched and looked around without seeming to. It was also clear.

I then went ahead to a location I’d already set up, across the street from my client’s next meeting. And then I watched. Fortunately, nothing happened. And so my day went on. Watching, observing. I had a few quick changes in my big backpack, and I made a point of changing out of habit. If I had missed someone else surveilling my client, I didn’t want to make it obvious that I was hanging around.

My day didn’t end until my client was safely back in his hotel room. It was a long day, which unfortunately is not atypical in my profession. I get to travel a lot, which is fun. But the guys who can afford to hire a team of BGs usually got where they were because they work long, hard hours. That means I do too.

At least, it did, until. . . Long story.
