Stayed up too late last night working on my house. This fireplace is a pain in the butt, but it’s going to look beautiful when I finish. As a result of my late night rehabbing, I slept in a little this morning. Nice thing about running my own agency as opposed to my years with the Chicago PD, is that I’m the one that dictates my schedule. On the downside, I’m subject to the ups and downs of being on my own. But business has been relatively steady lately. Unfortunately for our society but fortunately for me, there’s no shortage of bad marriages and cheating spouses. It gets a little mundane at times.
That’s probably why I took this new case yesterday, even though it was against my better judgment. As intriguing as the case is, I ignored a few red flags that a detective in his right mind with any sense of self-preservation would have steered clear of taking. I hate to admit it, but I think the fact that the client is knock-dead gorgeous may have influenced my decision. Everything I’ve learned about this case so far reeks of trouble. Yet, in spite of the warning signs and the apparent high-maintenance nature of my new beautiful client, I now have the task of finding her mysterious missing fiancé.
Perhaps when I find that right girl and finally get married, I won’t be such a sucker for a beautiful face. I was never in a hurry to get married, but I did figure I’d be settled down with someone by now. For whatever reason, it hasn’t happened yet. That’s okay though, I’m not worried about it.
Sometimes I wonder if I would have opened up my own investigation agency if I were married. It’s a little easier taking the risk of giving up a steady paycheck and starting a new business when I’m the only one depending on me. Well, I guess Booker depends on me, too. Booker is my German Shepherd. He doesn’t require much.
So far, it’s worked out. I get enough cases to pay all my bills. Plus, I’ve done well flipping houses over the years. It makes for long days sometime, spending eight to ten hours investigating and then another two to four hours working on the house. But I’d rather be busy than bored.
