be careful what you witch forSometime in October…

Once.

Just one time I let Baxter, my bullmastiff, up on the bed and now he thinks he owns it. He allows me about 4 inches of space on the edge and figures I should be grateful. After everything we’ve been through together, I’ve gotten attached to the big lug. But I never should have let him on the bed. At least he doesn’t steal the covers.

So, once again, I woke up clinging to the side of my mattress and having nightmares about cliffs.

But, even while I carefully sit up and try not to roll onto the floor, I’m focused on the positive. For one thing, the Fall Festival is in high gear and I am done with all my planning duties. I only have to show up to help my friend, Diana, run her vendor’s booth and shop for pumpkin pie. After last summer’s murder investigation, adopting the above-mentioned large dog, and quitting my job in Ann Arbor, I could use some pie.

I could also use some time with Mac. I know he likes pie. I thought that both of us moving back to Crystal Haven would mean we would see each other all the time, but it hasn’t worked out that way so far. I’ve been busy helping Diana plan the festival, he’s been busy tying up loose ends at his old job and investigating crimes here in Western Michigan (but, fortunately, not in our relatively quiet village). I have one final commitment and then we’ll have time for a proper date.

Tonight, Diana is performing a Halloween ceremony in the woods and I said I would bring my Aunt Violet along. Vi loves this kind of thing – the spookier the better. Diana made me promise to stay and keep Vi in line. Her…curiosity…can be difficult to control. But, I’m sure it will be fine. What could go wrong? At midnight. In the woods. On Halloween.

Right?
