A quick wave goodbye was all the man got as the door to the hotel room closed behind her. Outside, the morning sun warmed her skin. Today was a new day and but the job carried over. The boss man, Blu Carraway, had given the go ahead to get close to the special agent she’d just left. Blu probably didn’t mean for the situation to end up an all-nighter, but he should have known as that was the proven method. Plus, the Fed had been a wealth of knowledge on how the government hunted people down.

The phone chimed, the screen showing the caller to be BLUE, an inside joke on the boss.

“Hello?”

Blu said, “Harmony?”

“You got me.”

“What the hell happened? I needed you to follow the Fed last night, see where he went. Crome said you just left the guy’s hotel room.”

“He get a good show?”

It felt like someone had been watching, if from afar. Mick Crome, the boss man’s partner, was good at that. So good that he stayed out of sight, from the restaurant to the club, not that anyone would have come into focus for her from the dance floor after five vodka gimlets.

Blu said, “No, he complained that you closed the drapes.”

“A girl’s got to have some modesty.”

“I’m sorry,” he said. “I thought I was talking to Harmony Childs, the walking, talking, blonde bombshell of Carraway Investigations.” There was some sarcasm, but not a lot. The bombshell reference came from a recent social media post. Carrying the face of the sort-of new agency was a lot of work, but had its perks.

“You are, Sugar. And tell Mick he already blew his chance.”

Both of them had, and now both of them, like most men, begged for attention that only came when they had something to offer. Blu had offered money for good investigative work. And that’s what he got.

The Fed had offered information. Last night he thought he was in charge. Today, she would lead him around like a puppy.

He was easy pickin’s.
