Julie Hall first appeared in A Grave Calling and one of the best ways to learn about a person is by asking questions, so let’s get to know Julie.

What is your name?
Julie Hall.

How old are you?
30 years old.

What is your profession?
I dowse for the dead.

Do you have a significant other?
Yes.

What is his name and profession?
Garrett Pierce of the FBI.

Any children?
No. Garrett’s wife and son were killed by a drunk driver. He’d like a family again but, because I’m a recovering alcoholic and a child abuse survivor, I’m not sure that I’d make a good mother.

Do you have any sibling(s)?
No.

Does your parents live near you?
My family is dead.

Who is your best friend?
Tracey Cook is my bestie. She has a penchant for dying her hair outrageous colors, has a kind heart and also a genetic condition that causes her physical difficulty.

Cats, dogs or other pets?
My rottweiler, Wookie, is my first love. I recently inherited my mother’s cat, Fluffy. Being a cat owner has been an adjustment. Especially for Wookie.

What town do you live in?
Garrett and I are currently living in a small city outside of Seattle.

House or building complex? Own or Rent?
When we moved in together we bought a fixer upper. Garrett said it has good bones and I think that’s code for a lot of things are breaking. I was raised on a farm and I’m used to lots of space between neighbors. There are times when I wish I still lived in a single-wide trailer instead of in suburbia.

What is your favorite spot in your house?
I like to work with my laptop at my kitchen table in the morning and cuddle with my guy on the sofa in front of the TV in the evening.

Favorite meal? Favorite dessert?
If it wasn’t for Garrett I’d mostly eat popcorn or soup but he prefers more substantial meals so he does most of the cooking. I’ve developed a fondness for birthday cake since I never had it as a child.

Favorite hobby? Favorite color?
When I’m not looking for missing bodies, I like to go to old graveyards to hone my skills. I see if I can use my dowsing rods to calculate the approximate date of death of those who are buried. My favorite color would be the shade of lush green that covers Washington State in tall cedars.

Favorite vacation spot?
Garrett and I enjoy going to the Oregon Coast and staying at a B&B or driving up to Whistler Mountain.

Favorite author?
I like anything true crime.

Favorite sports team?
Go Mariners! I haven’t been to a baseball game in a while but my trusty ballcap is always close by.

Movies or Broadway?
Movies at home on the couch with my man.

Are you a morning or a night person?
If I’m wrapped in a case, I can be both but I prefer to sleep in.

Amateur sleuth or professional?
I’ve turned professional. Checkout my website at www.divinereunions.com.

Whom do you work with when sleuthing?
I work alone although I’m occasionally asked to assist the FBI or local law enforcement to find bodies. My best friend, Tracey, likes to think of herself as my assistant but sometimes she’s more work than help.

In a few sentences, what is a typical day in your life like?
When I first wake up I take my dog, Wookie, for a good jog. Like me, he grew up on the farm so finding comfort in the suburbs isn’t as easy for him as wandering a hundred acres. After our run I go home and start perusing my emails. People contact me requesting that I find the remains of their loved ones. There are times when the search is as easy as walking a hiking trail and waiting for my dowsing rods to cross to indicate a body. However, there are also times when my life is on the line and I find myself in the sites of a murderer who wants his victim to remain hidden.

Garrett, and I met when the FBI needed help finding the bodies buried by a serial killer. If Garrett isn’t out of town on FBI business, we’ll have breakfast together before he leaves for his Seattle office. My life hasn’t always been this sweet or simple which is why there are days I need to meet with my psychiatrist. I’m a recovering alcoholic trying to keep the dark, quicksand thoughts of an abusive upbringing from destroying my now peaceful life. It’s not easy to maintain a healthy mental state when your job is finding corpses.

Once I decide on a case, I’m on the road with my dowsing rods. Sometimes my quirky friend, Tracey, comes along for the ride. Some of my cases are more dangerous than others but having Garrett to come home to has made a lot of difference in my life. Dowsing for the dead wasn’t a career I chose. The dead chose me. I try to honor them the best way I can; by bringing them home.
