Hi, there. My name is Millicent Fairchild—call me Millie—and I’ve been chosen to give you a tour of the Kinsey Falls Living and Retail Community Center. So, right off the bat, you can see that the developers gave this place a dollar name when a dime name would’ve been fine. We call it the Community Center. Most of us do, anyway. I think maybe some of the younger people call it the LRCC. You can call it whatever you’d like. I believe they’re hoping you’ll call it home.

As you can probably tell, this place used to be a shopping mall. It was the place to hang out on Saturdays when I was younger. This place had a theater, a bookstore, a pet shop. . . We’ve still got a pet shop. It’s called Hightail It! and the sweetest guy works there. His name is Caleb, and I think he’d be absolutely perfect for my granddaughter Jade. Of course, she’s sworn off men for the moment, but I know she’d just love the stuffings out of Caleb if she’d give him half a chance.

Sorry. I got sidetracked. Back to the shopping mall. Well, it went kaput. And then this big, beautiful building was sitting here going to rot. It would break your heart. But then a developer came along and renovated the place. He redecorated the retail space downstairs and turned the upstairs into micro-apartments.

I live in one of the micro-apartments, and I’ll admit, they’re teeny. They’re efficient, though. I have a living room, kitchen, bedroom, and bathroom. I feel like I’ve got everything I need and most of what I want. Now, do I still have fifty pairs of shoes? No, I don’t. . .but I wasn’t wearing most of them anyway.

The apartments are divided to accommodate two groups—seniors and young professionals. We seniors—or golden oldies—are on the left side, and the YPs are on the right.

We have a community garden on each side of the building, the grounds are maintained by landscapers, and we have just about everything we could want as far as retail shops go. There’s Nothin’ But Knit—that’s the knitting shop my granddaughter Jade and her friend Terri own. We also have a café, pharmacy, gym and yoga studio, and salon. And there are still spaces available for rent because the Community Center hasn’t been around all that long. So, who knows what we’ll get in here next? We also have a business center, a library, and community gathering spaces.

Like I told you, it’s practically everything you could need or want. Even if the weather is bad, you can stay right inside and still find plenty to do. I hope you’ll be joining us!

You can read more about Millie in Hightail It to Kinsey Falls, the first book in the NEW “Kinsey Falls” series.
