Spell BookedI am Molly Addison Renard, retired school teacher, wife, mother, and part owner of Smuggler’s Arcane. I’m also a multi-generational witch.

My coven and my life are shared with my friends, Elsie and Olivia, who are also mature witches of a certain age. Our witch family roots go back many lifetimes in the Wilmington, North Carolina community.

My husband, Joe Renard is a Wilmington PD detective, and my son, Mike, is in college. Neither of them are witches, and they don’t know about my magic. It has to stay that way so the Grand Council of Witches doesn’t take them away from me. Secrecy is the primary rule for our kind.

But one day – I don’t even recall exactly when – my magic started fading. Olivia and Elsie have the same problem. Tasks that we once used magic for now have to be done by hand. We don’t share this information, of course. It’s embarrassing enough to admit to ourselves.

So now we’re looking for three witches to take our places. We’ll hand our spell book to them, and the magic will continue while we retire to Boca where all the older witches live.

There’s just one recent hitch: Olivia, my childhood friend, has been murdered. We don’t know who did it or how it was even possible. Witches have a sense of these things. We know when we’re going to die and how we’re going to die. It’s difficult to sneak up on us.

What makes it worse is that Joe and his partner are investigating Olivia’s death. With magic involved, I can only hope he doesn’t find the killer. Joe would have no chance at all against a powerful witch.

And our spell book – the book our three families have written in for hundreds of years – is missing. Elsie and I believe it was stolen by Olivia’s killer.

The Grand Council of Witches is no help at all. I can’t let Joe find the killer. It looks as though Elsie and I will have to find the witch ourselves with what remains of our magic and wits.Β  Spirits of the moon fly close.

β€œMolly!”

Excuse me. Elsie has accidentally turned our teapot into a crow. We’ll have to catch it before it turns back into a teapot and smashes down on someone’s head.

I seek to find what has been lost
With wand and light, I seek the way.
