The Witch and the Dead by Heather Blake is the seventh book in the “Wishcraft” mystery series. Publisher: Penguin Random House, October 2016

the-witch-and-the-deadThe national bestselling author of Gone with the Witch returns as wish-granting witch Darcy Merriweather uncovers dangerous skeletons in the closet—and the garage. . .

When Darcy moved to Salem, Massachusetts, she never expected her life to change as drastically as it did. But within a short time, the Enchanted Village has become her home, its mystical residents have become her family, and As You Wish, the personal concierge business formerly run by her Aunt Ve, has become her calling. Still, the time has come for change—and for Darcy to move out of Aunt Ve’s house.

Darcy’s belongings are stashed in Aunt Ve’s garage, alongside a mess of memories, forgotten possessions, and, to both Ve and Darcy’s horror, a pile of old bones. It turns out they belong to Ve’s long missing second husband. Now Darcy must unpack old secrets to solve a cold case—and make sure her aunt isn’t looking at a spell behind bars.

I love this series. This was a wonderfully charming read that kept me engaged in all that was happening on the pages. Darcy is once again investigating a crime that happened many years ago and the recent discovery exposed so many secrets that it was bound to have an effect on the residents of the Enchanted Village. The author did a brilliant job in setting the play by play narration that pulled me in immediately and I could not put this book down. I like the pacing which allowed me to savor the banter and the interaction amongst all the main characters. The multiple subplots each played a pivotal role in the overall mystery and I like how it all came together with some surprising twists that enhanced the telling of this tale. Boasting a feel-good atmosphere, entertaining dialogue and a great cast of characters this is one of the best book in this delightfully endearing series and with that ending which I love, love, love, I can’t wait to see what happens next with Darcy and the gang.
