I don’t know about you, but I’d love to have the bottomless purse of the heroine of the Books By the Bay mysteries. I could really purchase some stellar gifts for my family and friends.

As for Olivia, she’s more of an online shopper than a battle-the-crowds-at-the-mall type. So, after pouring herself a tumbler of Chivas Regal, she’ll sit at her desk overlooking the Atlantic Ocean and pull out her credit card.

First on her list is her oldest and truest friend, the roller skating dwarf, Dixie Weaver. Dixie has a heart as big as the entire town, but Olivia knows she wouldn’t appreciate a lavish gift. Dixie is also forced to shop in the kids’ section and is tired of wearing clothes covered by Strawberry Shortcake or Barbie, so Olivia will send her some designer clothes that are colorful and flirty, but no made for a kid.

Next is her friend Laurel Hobbs. Laurel is a journalist, wife, and mother of twin toddlers. Olivia buys her a deluxe spa package, shaking her head as she enters her credit card number and marvels over how much work her friend gets done each and every day.

Harris Williams is easy. He’s into high-tech gizmos and loves video games, so even though the man’s in his twenties, Olivia gets him a new Xbox and a few of the more violent games because Harris love to play soldier.

And Millay? The beautiful, Goth bartender down at Fish Nets? Olivia buys her a vintage motorcycle jacket from eBay. It’ll go perfectly with the lace-up black leather boots the gorgeous young woman always wears – even in the middle of the summer.

But what of the final member of the Bayside Book Writers? Police Chief Sawyer Rawlings? What will Olivia give a man who drinks chocolate milk and favors Hawaiian print shirts on his days off? A man who loves walks on the beach and is a talented artist? Shirts? Canvases? Painting supplies?

Why is it suddenly so hard to pick a gift for this man? He’s always been just another friend, but something about Olivia’s feelings for him are changing, deepening. To find out just how much, pick up the newest Books By the Bay mystery, THE LAST WORD, and see what kind of gift Olivia decided to give Rawlings to show him how she truly feels.

Happy Holidays from Olivia, Captain Haviland, and the Bayside Book Writers!
