I’m Rarity Cole. I own The Next Chapter, an independent bookstore on Main Street in Sedona, Arizona. I’m also a breast cancer survivor. I used to be on the career ladder for a St. Louis based company as a marketer. Then one bad mammogram changed my life and the way I looked at the world.
And, for a lot of people, the way they looked at me. In most people’s eyes, I was no longer the smart, savvy businesswoman. Instead, I was sick, or dying, or contagious. In my relationship, I became a burden. Kevin didn’t want to drag around a bald girlfriend. I was bad for his image. So he left.
I left my job and moved as soon as I rang the last bell at radiation. And I haven’t looked back. I’m happy in my new life. My best friend, Sam, runs a crystal shop next to me. My bookstore is growing and I’m almost in the black or I will be after a few years. And, I have a cute little house with a pool in the back so I can swim whenever I want to. The people I have around me are the ones I choose.
To add to my circle, I’ve started a breast cancer survivors’ book club. Our first meeting is tonight. I’m hopeful that we can be supportive of each other as we walk the new path our disease carved for us. Besides, who knows a survivor better than someone who also survived the same challenge.
Mostly, I just want a group I can talk about books with. People who don’t look at me strange when I say that I stayed inside last weekend finishing a book. My type of people.
I’m so excited about tonight’s meeting. I’ve got books pulled for the group to choose from. And I bought cookies for the group. You know the saying, a little sugar helps the medicine go down.
Wish me luck.

Survivors become sleuths to find a missing member of their book club in new-age Sedona, Arizona . . .
Two things got Rarity Cole through her breast cancer treatments: friends and books. Now cancer-free, Rarity is devoting her life to helping others find their way through the maze to healing. She’s opened a bookstore focusing on the power of healing—Eastern medicine, Western medicine, the healing power of food, the power of meditation, and the importance of developing a support community. To that end, she’s also started the Tuesday Night Survivors book club. With its openness to new-age communities, Sedona, Arizona, is the perfect fit for Rarity’s bookstore and the tightly knit group.
But their therapeutic unity is disrupted when one of their members suddenly goes missing. Martha has always kept to herself, never opening up much of her personal life to the group. Now she’s nowhere to be found. With her car abandoned on a trail and her dog left with a friend, Rarity is sure something terrible had happened—but will she be able to uncover Martha’s secrets before it’s too late?

Sounds wonderful, particularly the setting.
It’s a fun small town.
Lynn, I have been waiting for this series! You’re always an automatic pre-order for me, but this series touches me deeper. I lost my wife to metastasized colon cancer and other complications in 2018. I’m sure the series will evoke some tears, but that’s healing. Knowing you, it will also evoke laughter too. Thank you for being brave enough to write a profound series such as this. May you forever be in remission! XO
Thanks Tracy. I have to admit, it was a hard choice to write. this as it touches so many people. But survivors are people too. 🙂 Sorry you lost your wife – It’s not an easy thing to go through.
Finished today and can’t wait for the next book
I loved everything about this book and can’t wait for more. I was glad that surviving breast cancer was an important issue, but it did not overwhelm the story. The book club crew seem like people that I would appreciate being around, so I hope we get to spend a lot of time together over the next few years.
