Death Comes Quickly by Susan Witting Albert is the 22nd book in the “China Bayles” mystery series. Publisher: Berkley Prime Crime, April 2014
When China’s and Ruby’s friend Karen Prior is mugged in a mall parking lot and dies a few days later, China begins to suspect that her friend’s death was not a random assault. Karen was a filmmaker supervising a student documentary about the fifteen-year-old murder of a woman named Christine Morris and the acquittal of the man accused of the crime. Is it possible that the same person who killed Christine Morris targeted Karen?
Delving into the cold case, China learns the motive for the first murder may be related to a valuable collection of Mexican art. Enlisting the help of her San Antonio lawyer friend Justine Wyzinski—aka the Whiz—China is determined to track down the murderer. But is she painting herself into a corner from which there’s no escape?
It’s like homecoming when I enter the world of China Bayles and her friends. This book was a very enjoyable read in a series that continues to entertain me with a mystery that puts me right there with China and the tidbits of herbal living. In this book, China is on the case, once again, with some help from her friends who are a welcome sighting when they appear in the books. Unraveling everything comes down to one clue and will China grab it in time? You’ll have to read this to find out. A side story brings a bit of sadness, but of course with sadness there’s hope. This was a great read and I look forward to reading Bittersweet, the next book in this terrific series.
I’ve been wanting to read a Susan Wittig Albert mystery. Thanks for the helpful review.
This is one of the first mystery series that I started reading when I started reading the genre. I have really enjoyed the books from the start. I always look forward to each new book.
Seen her name around for years but never read her …. now would be a good time. Book sounds good.
Love this series. Have re-read most of it at least twice and they stand the test of time. Once again you’ve lured me, Drew, and I’ll be buying this one shortly. 🙂
I haven’t picked up one of this series in a long time. I guess I should go back now that you reminded me of it. Thanks.
Death Comes Quickly sounds like a great read. Thanks for the opportunity to win; good luck to all!
The China Bayles series is one of my favorites. When I read these books, I always picture Wimberley, Texas, which is one of my favorite towns in the Texas Hill Country. I can’t wait until Bittersweet comes out next month.
I adore this series! Sometimes China comes off dated, in books past, a bit of an old lady, but I think the author picked her up, dusted her off, and thrust her firmly into current times. Thank you for this review – I look forward to reading it.
Love this author and this book is definitely one that I will want to buy. Have read others so need to get the rest in this series. Thank you for letting us know about it Dru Ann.

I have all her books and look forward to each new one. She is also the first author I read when I started reading mysteries after retiring and think I read about 20 of them the first year. My mother gave one to me to read when I was in Texas and I was hooked. She has a lot of nice web pages and a great “Day Book”. She is truly multitalented and can do many crafty and garden type things besides writing and being a leader in an herbal and also writing association.
I would love to read it but living on s.s. I can’t pay that much for a book. Looks interesting
