Why do you write the genre that you write?
I found that when I was writing mysteries the emotional journeys of my characters started to overshadow the mystery plot—and more than that, I wanted to explore those journeys a little bit more. I’ve always loved including magical elements in my books (I have three mystery series with magic in them) and it seemed like a natural progression to switch to writing magical realism standalones. But even though these books aren’t true mysteries, they still have a little mystery within them.

Tell us how you got into writing?

My career started with a dream. Literally. I woke up one morning in the late ‘90s with a vivid image of a plot, characters, and dialogue in my head. Thanks to some encouragement from my husband, I tried my hand at writing it all down. Four hundred and fifty pages that included baseball players, a love triangle, and a kidney donation made up my first book. Don’t look for it in stores—it’s on a closet shelf where it leads a happy coexistence with the dust bunnies. But once I started writing, I found I didn’t want to stop. Thirty-plus books later, I’m thinking it was the right (write?—ha, couldn’t help myself) decision.

What’s next for you?
My next book is The Lights of Sugarberry Cove, out in July. Family, forgiveness, and a little lake magic.

What are you reading now?
I recently finished reading Love & Saffron by Kim Fay — look for this wonderful, heartwarming novella next year.

And even more fun . . .

You are stranded on a deserted island. What are your three must-haves?
I’m a practical kind of person! My husband. Food. Shelter.
